Altar Servers

Our altar servers perform most of the functions of the former "minor order" of ordained clerics known as acolytes (from the Greek word akolouthos or 'attendant'). Church writings from the second and third centuries discuss the role of acolytes, giving the office great importance and honor in the history of the Church. The primary role of the altar server is to assist the priest in the celebration of the liturgy during Mass. This is done through specific actions (carrying cross or candles in the processions, bringing or holding items for the priest as required) and by setting an example to the assembly by their active participation in the liturgy (hymns, responses, etc.). Any child, in fifth grade or above, in our parish school or Religious Education program, who wants to be more involved in the parish and is ready to assume this responsibility may contact Tony Carlin at tcarlin@stjohnscatholic.org

"When I'm up there I feel special in a way.like I am helping the Lord and the Lord is going to protect me when I'm older. I just feel very comfortable."

If you have ever helped anyone in need, if you have ever given anyone the opportunity to help you, then you experienced true grace — God's free gifts to us!
